By Telegraph. Per Peess Association. WELLINGTON. January 7. A two-storeyed nine-roomed house on the Island Bay road, owned and occupied by Mi' R. G. Knight, sailmaker, was destroyed by lire last night. The house was insured in the Commercial Union for £6OO. The contents, which were saved, were not insured. The origin of the fixe is unknown. Lieutenant-Colonel Messenger, for many years in charge of the Permanent Artillery Force, and Captain Falconer, in charge of the Torpedo Corps, have retired from the service. It is understood that LieutenantColonel Messenger will be replaced by Major Moore, of the Royal Engineers, who came out to the colony a year or two ago as Staff Officer of Artillery. Captain W. Coyle, Inspector of Submarine Mining at Auckland, will temporarily fill the position occupied by Captain Falconer. LieutenantColonel Newall, in charge of the Welling: ton district, is also to retire, and other changes are pending. The San Francisco mail will go south by the Waikare to-morrow afternoon, if the Takapuna arrives in time. BLENTTEFH. _ January 7. A peculiar accident, resulting fatally, occurred to an infant son of Mr A. H. Lucas, of the Telegraph Department, this morning. The child, aged two and a half years, was playing a kitten and, while putting it into or taking it out of-a box, the lid fell on the nape of the child's neck, dislocating it.

A preliminary inquiry into the wreck of the Gairloch is being held to-day by the Collector of Customs. It is not open. to the Press. The 'Harbor Board's dredge yesterday salvaged the ship's stores and furnishings, and if- the weather continues fine it should be possible to save -a great deal.
