Wellington, September 16. The following is> the text of the AgentGeneral's cable, dated London, 14th:—"The mutton market is firm and. stocks are firmly held in a few hands. The average prices to-day are: Canterbury mutton 3§d, North. Island 3jd, River Plate 3£d. Trade as very disappointing and there is only a hand-to-mouth demand. There is a dull sale for lamb ; Canterbury brand 4fd, other brands There is an inclination to force sales of lamb. The beef market is quiet; NewZealand hinds 3gd, fores 2|d. The stocks of New Zealand beef are light. The hemp market is very firm. The auction sales this week closed with a strong demand. Good, fair Wellington spot £2B, November-De-cember £26. The reports from Manila indicate that light shipments of hemp are expected. The butter market is Very firm; Canadian 107s, Danish 120s. The cheese market is dull. Canadian is quoted at 465. DUNEDIN HORSE SALE. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., report as follows :—We had only a moderate supply of horses for this week's sale, about two-thirds of them draughts, mostly aged, ■ i.nd one-third medium liacks, and some useful harness horses. The demand both privately and at auction for young, useful draughts is very keen, and horses of this description find ready sale at the present time. Aged heavy "draughts are difficult to sell except at prices considerably less than vendors seem disposed to accept. Our sales in draught stock this week include a-magnificent prize gelding, five yeaTS old, bred by Mr E. Menlove, of Windsor Park, sire British Monarch, dam a Prince Victor mare, at the record price of £6O; a firstclass four-year-old colt, bv Tasman, bred by Mr John Hamilton, of Becks, at £44; three six-year-old geldings at from £3B to £42; two heavy spring van horses, four • years old. one at £36 10s and others at "£54105, and some half, dozen aged draught mares and geldings at from £2l to £3O, Next Saturday we shall offer a team of ten first-class draught mares and geldings on account of Messrs Tonkin and Co, of Wedderbnrn (see advertisement). We offered several useful light harness horses to-day, and sold a couple of good buggy beasts, the one at £2O 10s and the other at £2O. Several others of lower quality and aged sold at from £9 to £l4 ss. We quote as follows : —Superior young draught geldings £4O to £SO; extra'good prize horses, £52 to £6O: medium draught mares and geldings. £2B to £3B; aged do, £lB to £25; upstanding carriage horses, £25 to £3O; well-matched carriage pairs, £6O to £80; strong spring-van horses. £25 to £3O; milk-cart and butchers' cart horses, £l6 to £2l: tram horses, £l2 to £ls; light liacks £8 to £l2; extra good liacks £lB to £25 ; weedy and aged hacks and harness horses. £2 to £5.
