Acclimatisation Society.
A meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held last eveving, when there were present—Messrs George Glen (in the chair), T. Jones, C. Jones, Oliver, Capt. Crawford, and H. Mackintosh (Secretary).
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. It was decided that an account be passed for shags heads, the rate to be 2s per head. Captain Hamilton, of the Northern Club, Auckland, wrote thanking the local Society for photos of the trout sent Home last season for exhibition. The writer also intimated that he would be glad to receive a photo of the largest takes this season. Captain Hamilton, who is writing a book on sport In New Zealand, thanked the Secretary and Mr Duncan Sutherland for information which had been supplied pertaining to this district. The Otago Acclimatisation Society wrote offering fry to the Society, but, the Society not requiring any at present, no action was taken. A letter was received from the "Waimate branch, with reference to securing a piece of the Waikakahi Estate for camping purposes. The President of the Waitaki Society also wrote to Wellington on the subject, and urged that some 100 acres be reserved for a township at the river mouth. He pointed out that in all probability the canning of salmon would be an industry at no very distant date, and it would be advisable to have a piece of land that could be available for the purpose.
Ib was decided to communicate with Mr Duncan to urge on the Department the necessity of the Government complying with the desire of the Society on the subject, and pointing out that the land at the mouth of the river was of little value, and its reservation for the purpose indicated would be no great loss to the Government.
This being all the business the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
