Social at Whare-Kuri.

(from our own correspondent.) A social in aid of the school funds was held at Whare-Kuri on Friday night last. The weather was all that could be desired, and despite the counter attraction of a bachelors' ball at Otematata,. a large number assembled, drags bringing people from both Kurow and Sandhurst. An excellent musical programme had been provided, and was carried out with great eclat. It was opened by the Kurow choir singing a glee, "Hail, smiling morn," which they performed In a very creditable manner. Miss Ash followed with the song " Two's company, three's none," in her usual efficient manner. The next Item was a song by Mr Trounce, " Kissing in the tunnel," for which he was greeted with ia vociferous encore, ar.d he responded with "The rolling stone." A duet, "Tell me where is beauty found," by Mr Orange and Miss Anderson, followed. and was creditably rendered. Mrs Hesketh next sang " Kathleen Mavourneeii, and in response to an encoro gave "The cows are in the clover." The nexb item was a song, " Evening," by Miss Ford, efficiently rendered. Miss Cooper, of Waimate, followed with " Lochnagar," and in response to an encore sang " Heather Hills." The singing of this young lady, who is a stranger among us, was quite a treat, and she showed herself quite at home In Scottish song. Mrs Hesketh and Mr Trounce next gave the duet " What are the wild waves saying 1" In excellent style. Mr Hille, by request, sang " Anchored," and on being encored gave " Home, boye, homo." Both items were well sung. A duet, "Tho crookit bawbee," by Miss Cooper and Mr Kelly, was sung in such excellent style that a vociferous encore resulted, and in response they repeated the last verse. Mr Trounce followed with " A soldier and a man " in excellent style. Miss Cooper again sang, giving " Afton Water " in such a manner that comment by me would be superfluous. Mrs Hesketh closed the musical programme by singing '* Needles and pins," which afforded much merrimenb to tho audience. An excellent tea had been provided by the ladies of the district, and was done ample justice to. A vote of thanks to the performers and providers of the tea, and also to those who had tastefully decorated the room with flowers and evergreens, concluded the first part of the programme. I must nob omit to mention a special vote of thanks to Mrs T. Munro, who generously came from Kurow to give her services ss accompaniste. A dance, to music supplied by Mr T. Munro (violin) and Mr W., Hille (accordion), was carried on till an early hour, and concluded a mosb enjonablo evening.
