(by telegraph.) (PEK PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN. April 21. Mr D. Borrie has been elected chairman of the Education Board. GISBORNE. April 21. The scow Pirate, 192 tons, bound from Newcastle to Gisborne, was wrecked on Portland Island, in the storm on Friday morning. The vessel lost her sails in a fierce squall and was driven on a lee shore. Karl Berner, able seaman, native of Germany, died during the excitement I of the wreck, it is supposed from failure of the heart's action. The cook SVatkins had his shoulder dislocated, and mate Mobertf had his leg disabled. The crew received great kindness from the light-.-eople. and came on to Gisborne in r:> s tenner AngJisn. The vessel is a • ' c r.re k, She vfai, cv'nei by Mr • IsicoL Aiicki-'.nd. Anrii edin. NAPIER. April 21. Mr Hall-Jones arrived this morning, and was immediately besieged by deputations. Arrangements were made, however, to receive to-morrow a deputation representing the whole of the local bodies. This afternoon Mr Hall-Jones, accompanied by Mr Goldsmith (Crown Lands Commissioner) and Mr Lowe (Railway Engineer), drove round Meanee and Clive to get some idea of the extent of the damage. Mr Ormond has been selected Chairman of the Education Board.
