THE OAMARU TOURNAMENT. In the second round of the tournament yesterday J. A. Boreham won his two games very easily from Butterfield. Mulvey secured a win and a draw with Lee. The win was secured very neatly on the following lines :—Lee (white) stood on 19, 20, 21, 22, 26. 27. 28, 30, and 32; Mulvey (black) on 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 23. With 1317 Mulvey gave Lee the option of taking either one of two men without altering black's strength, and he won with a clever shot. Gibson did not take advantage of several opportunities arising in his game with Leggatt, and the Wellington champion forced a draw. Sim won a Dyke from Sounness, and played a Souter, which should have been drawn, but which Sounnes3 lost through a bad move. The position was : Black—l, 7, S, 11, 12, 11, 18. Sounness, with white on 9, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26, 30, had the move, and playing 26 23, lost. With 21-17 a draw was on. After lunch Scott and J. A. Boreham were drawn together, and as usual this table was the centre of attraction. In the White Djke, Boreham, playing white, held a good position thus: White—32, 18, 13, 11, king on 10 ; black—3, 5, 23, 27, 23. Boreham played 10 15, and play proceeded 27 31, 15 19. 23-26, 18-14, 26 30. 14-10, 30-26, 19 15, 26 23, 11-7, 3-3, 7 3. 8 12, 3-7. 12 16, 7-11, 16-20, 11-16, 31 26, 16-12, 2319, and Scott secured a well-deserved draw. The second game between the same competitors was also drawn. Gibson and Sim and Crook and Hannah also drew all their games, the play being of a high order. Leggatt was of! color. He has been suffering severely from diarrhi i.i brought on by his sea passage. In the evening Boreham met Hannah, of Otautau. The first game was a Double Corner, and Boreham, getting on a strong position, won. Crook lost a Laird and Lady to Anderson, and Halpin turned a clear win into a draw by an oversight. Crook also lost a game to Anderson which he should have won, but secured a draw with the second. Flannery lost both games to Lucas. Brownlee and Scott secured a win each.
