Jones, M.L.C., to constitute that Commission, which will probably sit within a few days. The Garrison Band will play an attractive programme in front of George's, Hall, I ha:nes-;treet, beginning at 7.15 this evening.

The anniversary of Wesley Church is to be celebrated by i-pecial services to-inor o\v, and a soiree on Tuesday eveni g. The Rev. Mr Percy Mitchell, whose name seems to be synonymous with misfortune, met with a severe accident last night. He went to the baths in the evening with Mr Craddock for a swim and apparently overlooking the fact that the tide was rath r low, dived from the spring board. He evidently struck his he id on the sand bank for on coming to the surface he rolled over into deep water ejaculating " save me." Mr Craddock at ones went to his assistance and succeeded in bringing him ashore in a semi-conscious condition. He was taken to the i-tar and Garter Hotel where Dr de Lautour attended to his injuries, which are of a somewhat severe nature.

There was a good attendance at Columba Church last night when Mrs Milne, at the invitation of Columba Church Endeavor Society, delivered a lecture on the mission work in the New Hebrides. Mr JW. Glen filled the chair. The lecturer gave a most interesting address, her reminiscences of the islands and their people being vivid and comprehensive. The nrstress of a Board School was summoned at Westminster for flogging a female pupil, aged thirteen. The girl had feurned out a staircase gas-jet, which might have led to a panic As the girl declined to hold out her hand to receive punishment, she? was with assistance placed across a table and caned in what was described as a degrading manner. The Magistrate thought such a form of chastisement to a girl was not permitted by law, but he declined to impose any pubishment upon the mistress, promising to consider an application for carrying the case to a superior court. ; A meeting of thR Local Committee of the Itfew Zealand Rifle Association was held last 'evening, his Worship the Mayor in the chair. The following resolution was passed. "That this committee expresses its disapproval of the proposal bo hold a picnic on Sunday, and recommend that an application be made to apply the grant to a social, to be held on the night of the presentation of prizes." This resolution of the Local Committe was approved of by the Council of the Rifle Association, and a meeting of the Local Committee will be held to-night at the Borough Chambers, at 8.30, to. arrange the details of the social. A pleasing little ceremony took place during a recess, of the practice of the Wesley Church Choir last evening, when Mrs Porteous was made the recipient of a handsomely framed enlarged photo of th« mßm-

Ml- Flamank, th o conductor, in making the presentation, spoke in high terms of Mrs Porteous ai a member and, on behalf of the choir, he had much pleasure in handing her the small gift aa a rem mbrance of the happy hou s which i-he had spent among them. Mrs Porteous, who suitably rep ied, said that she regretted her severance from the choir, but still, in the gift which she had received so unexpectedly she could always look at t'nose she hud been associated with, and it would always reining her of the pleasant hours she had spent among them. On Tuesday next a team from the Terrace Tennis Club (Timaru) will come to Oamaru to play a match with the club here. At the Magistrate's Court this morning before Major Keddell, S.M., iJaniel O'Sul'. liva.n pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting Thomas Curru.ii, aged 5 years of age, a sou of John Curran. Mr Newton up. peared for the informant, Mr John Curran, and stated that defendant was at present under recognisances to keep the peace for a previous offence at Mr Cnrran's. Notwithstanding this he had been a great nuisance about the place and his offences culminated on the date in question by an unprovoked assault upon the informant's little sou. Colin Munro gave evidence as to having witnessed the assault. The defence was a simple denial of the offence, accuse ! slating that the informant had been trying to get him into trouble ever since lie was bound over. Accused was convicted »nil fined >IOs and LI 10s costs, in default 14 days' hard labor.
