DUNEDIN MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) report as under for the week ending September 12th:— Fat Cattle.—7l head were yarded, mostly good to prime and medium weights, none being very heavy. Owing doubtless to the small entry competition was very ikeen, good prices being secured, atid :more could have been readily placed at a substantial advance on last week's prices. Best bullocks brought LlO to Lll; : medium to good, L 8 5s to L 9 15s ; light ' weights. L 6 12s 6d to L 7 17s 6d ; best cows, L 8 to L 9 ; medium to good, L 5 17s 6d to L 7 15s : light and aged, L 3 15s to L 4 17s 6d. Fat Sheep. —2301 were penned, of which 300 were merino wethers. Only a . very few ewes came to hand. The wethers included a good many pens very prime and heavy weights, which were well competed for, while the demand for ordinary quality was much less satisfactory, last week's prices being barely maintained. Best crossbred brought 15s 9d to 17s 3d ; medium to good, 13s 6d to 15s ; light, 9s 6d to 12s 6d ; best do ewes, 13s 6d to 15s ; light weights and ordinary quality, 8s 6d to 12s 6d ; merino wethers, 6s 2d to lis 6d. Wheat.—Advices from Home in reference to the position cf the market there are not, so far, very encouraging. Prices remain fairly steady, but are still very low, affording but little inducement to export. The local market does not show very much animation. Odd lots are disposed of at auction occasionally, but not very many privately, showing that the demand is not by any means pressing. Shipments of Victorian continue to arrive, which is having an adverse effect on the tone of this market. There is very little show now for any further rise in price; rather the contrary, unless the market at Home shows an upward tendency, which at the moment is somewhat doubtful. Quotations : For best milling velvet, 2s lOd to 2s lid ; good to best do and best Tuscan, 2s 8d to 2s lOd; good to best red wheat, 2s 7d to 2s 9d ; medium to good, 2s 6d to 2s 7d ; good whole fowl's wheat, 2s 5d to 2s 6d; broken and inferior. Is 9d to 2s 4d (ex srore, sacks weighed in, terms.) Oats.—A moderate demand only exists for these, and last week's quotations are more difficult to secure. Buyers, while willing; to operate, are not in a position to give prices quite up to those lately obtaining except on rare occasions. The business done is to a very moderate extent. Millers' requirements are weekly becoming smaller, and they now purchase only when suitable lots offer at their valuations. The position is not by any means satisfactory. We quote prime milling, Is 5d to Is sid; best short bright feed, Is 4d to Is 4|d ; medium, Is 3d to 4d ; inferior, Is Id to Is 2-i-d (ex store, sacks extra, net). Barley.—The market for this cereal is in much the same position this week as last. There is very little prime offering—indeed, not very much of any sort, though perhaps, quite sufficient for present requirements: Further on, however, we expect to meet with a brisker demand springing up as maltsters' stocks become reduced. Meantime we quote prime malting, 3s 6d to 3s 9d; choice, 4s ; medium to good, 3s to 3s 3d ; milling, 2s 3d to 2s 9d ; feed, Is 8d to 2s (ex store, sacks extra). Grass Seeds. —Ryegrass seed is moving off only very slowly, mostly in retail lots, there being but few sales of any magnitude effected. The demand is chiefly for small seed, well dressed, for which we quote 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; choice. 4s ; medium to good, 3s to 3s 9d (ex store, sacks extra, net).—Cocksfoot is moving off in small lots, best fetching 6d to 6kl; medium, 5d to s|d per lb. Chaft.—Consignments to hand during the past week have been on a larger scale Prices in consequence are easier, best being worth L2 10s to L2 12s ; extra, L2 15s ; medium to good, L2 5s to L2 7s 6d ; inferior, LI 10s to L2 2s 6d per ton (ex truck, sacks extra, net). Potatoes.—The market is exceedingly flat, the demand being confined to requirements for local consumption only. It is difficult to quit consignments daily coming forward, making the supply so very much in excess of immediate wants, and buyers are not disposed to purchase for stock. Quotations : For best. Derwents, 32s 6d to 37s 6d; medium to good, 25s to 30s per ton (ex store, sacks weighed in, net).
