Moeraki.

(FROM oun OWN COItItESPONDKXT.) It would soem as if the "clork of tlio weather" had been in a sportive mood during the past month, and the weather to which Ave have been treated has really been something very various. But the climax was reached on Saturday and Sunday last, when wo were treated to a bit of real winter, with the heaviest fall of snow we have had here for a good many years, accompanied by a bitterly cold south-west wind. We have had very little genial spring weather as yet, and growth is very backward. August lias been another poor month for the fishing industry, owing to tlio prevalence of boisterous winds and heavy seas. There have been only nino or ton fishing days during the month. A few days about the middle of the month were very good, and on the loth there was, perhaps, the biggest haul of blue cod ever landed at Moeraki in one day—considerably over a hundred dozen of those fish, besides a good many groper and perch. I notice that one of the Port Chalmers boats has come up here for a spell. It seems that very little fish is being got there just now. The contractors for metalling the Port road have, I see, stopped operations for some reasons best known to themselves, and have left one of the worst portions of the road untouched. This is a piece of about four or five chains of new formation opposite Mr Hull's property, and which was "gravelled" last fall. The reason given by the contractors for stopping is, I am told, that this portion is too soft to cart on to, a sad comment on the previous gravelling, surely. However, there it is, and the fish dealers and others are left to " trackle " through the old tracks as best they may. An adjourned meeting of the Moeraki Regatta Club was held in the schoolhouse on the evening of the Ist instant, when it was resolved that the regatta be held oil Boxing Day, instead of New Year's Day as heretofore. A draft programme was drawn up and other routine business transacted. September 6, 1594.
