A skirmish occurred at Ping \ ang on Friday between the Chinese and .Japanese troops. The King of Corea has despatched a representative to Pekin. who conveys a number of presents for the Dowager Empress on the anniversary of her birthday. Received September 11, at 10.45 a.n:. Shanghai, September 10. The Chinese cruiser Chean has been wrecked. She had 1400 men on board, and they had a narrow escape. The Chinese boarded the French nr.il steamer at Shanghai, searching for Japanese officers returning from Europe. The cvptain threatened to summon a wicahip. Ic is reported that the Chinese in North <7.,irtvi are hemmed in and without food. TEiey are reduced to eating cavalry pontes. The Japanese man-of-war Haiwhaisank after engaging the Chen-Yuen. Another cruiser was badly injured, and is now in dock at Nagasaki.

The Japanese have offered L 150,000 as compensation for the sinking of the Kowshung. It has leaked out that Li Hung Chang successfully negotiated for mediation by Russia and Great Britain, but the Emperor showed indignation at his action and stopped the proceedings.
