DUNEDIN RACES. (BY telegraph.) Dunedin, May 24. There was a large attendance at the D.J.C. March meeting, despite the rain falling in the forenoon and a shower or two later. Although the sun came out the weather was bleak and cold. No liquor was sold on the course, but private supplies and the issue of passes, which permitted of visits to a hotel quite close to the gates, enabled those who desired to get all they wanted. Speculation was fairly brisk, the amount put through the machine being L 4755, compared with L 4307 last year. The following are the results : Hurdle Race, of 70 sovs. Mr Waddell's Empire, 11.10 (Cotton) ... 1 Mr Sheenan's Erin-go-Bragh, 10.3 (Sheenan) ... 2 Mr Cook's Smuggler, 9.10 (Bamber) ... 3 Rebel, Silvertail, Invader, Ben, Victory, and Nenthorn also ran. Empire won all the way. Time, 4min Usee. Dividend, L 3 Is. Maiden Plate, of 50 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr H. Lunn's Barnardo, 3yrs 1 Mr Brown's Errington 2 Mr Friedlander's Wheedler 3 Three others ran. Won by threequarters of a length after a good race. Time, 2min 20sec. Dividend, L2. Birthday Handicap, of 250 sova; second horse, 30 sovs; third, 15sovs. One mile and a half. Mr Stephenson's Hippomenes, 8.8 ... 1 Mr Hobbs'Lady Zetland, 8.4 2 Mr Reid's Skirmisher, 8.2 3 . There also ran—Vogengang (8.10), Liberator (8.9), Wolseley (7.9), Mariner (7.7), Remembrance (7.2), Speculator (6.7). A fine race, Hippomenes winning by less than two lengths after a welltimed run. Time, 2min 45sec. Dividend, L 5 6s. Three-mile Trot, of 75 sovs. Mr M'Kewan's Welcome Lass, 22sec ... 1 Mr Berlin Abdallah, scr 2 Mr Pitchie's Ophir, 24sec 3 Nine others ran. Won by 30 yards. There were only two investors in the inside and one on the outside. Time, Bmin 3sec. Dividend, L 99 18s and LBl 18s. Selling Race, of 50 sovs. One mile and a distance. Mr P. M'Grath's Jacob Faithful 1 Mr Russell's Review 2 Mr Shennan's Lady Sockburn 3 Nine others ran. Won by a clear length. Time, 2min ssec. Dividend, L 8 15s and L 4 6s. The winner was bought in for L2B. Tradesmen's Handicap, of 120 sovs; second horses, 15 sovs; third, 5 sovs. One mile. Mr Waddell's Bay Bell, 7.13 1 Mr J. Stephenson's Forbury, 8.4 ... 2 Mr Brown's Warrington, 7.10 3 Captive (7.12), Aldershot (7.9), Dora (7.7), Maribyrnong (7.5), and The Winchman (6.10) also started. A bad start.
