The Christchurch Hospital

(BY TELEGRAPH.) Chkistchckch, May 21. At a meeting of the Hcspital Board the House Committee reported that the Government had been applied to for its promised grant of LSOO, but it was to be regretted "that the Minister for the Department had seen fit to alter his views on the subject and now implies that if the Board finds it impossible to complete building fresh proposals must be laid before him." The Chairman said that the only letter referring to the grant received by the Board contained no stipulation as to the site on which the Home should be built. Mr Wood, former Chairman of the Board, said that he had distinctly stated at the meeting of the Board, when the letter had been read, that the LSOO was given contingent on the garden site being used. The Minister had not altered his views on the matter, and the Board would have to accept the position and make a fresh application as suggested in the letter now before it. He had to protest against the clause in the house committee's report. It should not go out in that form. Several members supported Mr Wood's statement, and after some discussion the clause in the report was altered to read : "As some misunderstanding has arisen in reference to the subject, a fresh application be made to the Minister." At the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board to-day, it was resolved to appoint honorary lady inspectors to investigate applications from women and children for relief. In April outdoor relief was afforded to 428 cases, comprising 1290 persons. The Chairman denied the statement made at the meeting of the unemployed committee that the Board had withheld relief in deserving cases, or that any harshness had been shown to applicants.
