INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.
(BY TELEGRAPH.) (per press association.) WELLINGTON. July 4. A petition against the Compensation to Publicans Bill is being taken round for signature. Its opponents say that, the Bill has been sprung upon _ the people suddenly without allowing time for the country to express itself respecting it, and they claim that the Victorian experiment pleases neither the public_ nor the publican, and that its repeal- is being agitated.

July 4. The Sew Hoy Big Beach got 101 ounces of retorted gold for tlic week. GISBOItNE. July 4. The heaviest flood experienced here for 16 years occurred to-day, owing to heavy rains ou Saturday night and yesterday. The homesteads of many settlers are surrounded by water, while several have had to leave their dwellings. The Waipawa Kiver overflowed its banks, and thousands of acres of land are under water. There lias been considerable loss of stock. Culverts have been carried away, No loss of life is reported. It is still raining, and it is feared the worst is not yet over.
