(by telegraph.) (I'EK PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. February 11. The promoters of the Liberal newspaper are negotiating with Captain Baldwin for the purchase of the Now Zealand Times. It is understood that satisfactory terms are offered, and the purchase is likely to be concluded within a day or two. Captain Baldwin is retiring from the newspaper business on account of illhealth. A considerable amount of capital has been subscribed for the purpose, one gentleman alone in Dunedin having put in LIOOO. The Governor is to be entertained by the Wellington Club to-morrow evening, and by Dr Newman on Monday. The Governor will probably leave for Auckland overland on Tuesday morning. The sale of the New Zealand Times was concluded this evening. The price is L 4500, exclusive of book debts. About L7OOO is subscribed so far, of which Sir W. Buller provides L2OOO. No difficulty is anticipated by the promoters in obtaining all the needful capital. AUCKLAND. February 12. At a meeting of members and intending members of the New Zealand Rille Association re the Association's meeting, it was stated that live civilians have already entered, and there will be probably •!() volunteers from Auckland. To-night the Auckland Naval Artillery decided to send Lieutenants Smith and Little to represent, the company, and a third man, if one is qualified. INVERCARG ILL. February 12. The jury in the sealskin case against Newton were locked up for the night, being unable to agree. Hatch's civil action against Waddell and Roberts, who bought the skins in question, will bo commenced to-morrow. The Court was occupied this morning with the breach of promise case Valentine v. M'Killop, claim L2OO, but it was not concluded. The engagement of the parties was admitted, but it was sought to show that the plaintiff was a person of loose morals. Letters, in which compromising statements were made, alleged to be written by the plaintilt to a former lover were produced, but she denied that she wrote the letter, and asserted that her writing was imitated. Mr Hatch did not take cut a warrant against. Mullay, as reported yesterday. The Southland County Council reappointed Mr Howarth, engineer, who left the service for a more remunerative position, which he immediately resigned. The Council had invited applications for the position, but rejected all and gave the post to Mr Howarth, ,vho was not a candidate. The dome bridge is repaired, and the Dunedin express was only 10 minutes late to-day.
