OPERA AT THE PUBLIC HALL.

The Seymour-Walshe Company played to only a moderate house last night, the ability displayed by the company all round being deserving of better patronage. Judging from the attendances at tho la3t two or three entertainments, either the palate for amusement of the Oamaru public is cloyed, or their pockets aro in a sad state of depletion. Perbap3 a combination of tho two causes would be nearer the matk. The opera produced last night was the favorito "Las Cloches de Corneville," and it was eung and acted with a commendable amount of Bpirlt and " g"," considering the empty state of the house. Indeed the whole production was quite equal to, if not superior, to anything the company played here while travelling as the Simonsen opera company. Miss Seymour scored a succes3 es Germaine, ker signing being only surpassed by her excellent acting. Miss E:hel Mackay took the part of Serpoletto very cleverly, her impersonation being remarkably spirited and vivacious. Mr Walshe, as GreiocliEDX, Gang and acted well, and hid to respond to several encores, as had Mr England 33 Marquis de Corntvilie. The part of Gaspard, the old miser, is one which r; quires considerable dramatic ability to fill efficiently, a desideratum which was fully supplied by Mr Pollard. The grotesque antics of Gobo and the Baiile were inimitably rendered by Mr Scott and Mr Rsade, causing frequent bursts of spontaneous laughter. The piece waa well siajed, which in addition to the admirable singing and acting of the company caused the opera to be received with great satisfaction by those pieient. The company will give a mixed concert at the Athcrteam Hall to-night assisted by several lccal amateurs. The proprogramme of the concert will consist of operatic selections and national ballads. A full programme appears in another column of this iß3ne.
