OUR EXPORTS.

Mr Stead, at tbe annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, said that it was pleasing to leara from the Chairman's address that the exports of 1887 had been In excess of those of ISS6. Ha vai glad to be able to say that, in looking over lome figures for bis own information, he had come to the conclusion th.it the exports to Great Britain for 1888 would probably exceed those of 18SS by nearly L 1,000,000 sterling. The increases were aa follow :—84,000,0001bs of wool at an advanced price of Id per lb, L 330,000; 7500 tons of tallow, at L2O per toD, Ll5,000; 750.000 frozen sheep hid been shipped in 1887, aod the enhanced Talae on tbe same number f.ir 1888, owing to tbe redaction in freights and rise in prices, would probably b« 4s per head, or, aay, L 150.000. Taking the 250,000 more ■beep that wonld be shipped in 1888 than in 1887 at 12i 6d each fir the carcases Alone would produce L 156,250. Then there would he 1,500.000 bushels nf wheat ■hipped in 1888 io excess of the 1887 shipments, which would give, at 3 per bushel, 1.225.000- The total of these increases amounted to L 806,250, or nearly L 1,000,000 aterling. If they added to this the increased value of our shipments of batter, potatoes, oats, cheese, hams and bacon, etc., to Australia, the grand total of the increase on the value of their exports would be certainly not less than L 1,000,0001
