We unde stand that the Awamoko School Committee hare nominated-Miss "■ hompson, a daughter of Inspector 1 fcompson, for the newly created position of matron of the school. *

It is stated <that the Be v. Mr Keating has resigned the position of St. Lake's Church but we have not learned the reason which has led the rev. gentl. man thus early to sever hie connection with the parish. Mr John Dnr.can is gaaetted a member of the Otago Land Hoard. A gazette just to hand contains the announcement that Mr David Cossgrove has been created captain, and Mr J. W. Patercon, lieutenant of the Otepopo Eifla Volunteers, and Mr Richard KJapstick lieutenant of the Waimata volunteers.

The following team will represent the Oamam Clab ;n its match against the Roslyn Club to-morrow:—Sumpter, Ferene, Robinson, J. Millington, W. L. Butt, Crawford, T. Hewat, Grenfell, Bllton, Hardy, and BortoD. It is requested that the eleven will turn np sharp at 9.30. The annual picnic of Emmanuel Congregational Church Sue day School will take place to-day in Brooklet Paddock, near the.Fnglish Church parsonage. The children will start from the church at 9 o'clock. Inspeotor Thompson.has received official intimation that North Otago has been constituted a separate police district under his independent direction. Inspector Ihompson's district will comprise the counties of Waitaki and Waihemo, and, in addition to the four police stations in this county, it includes Palmerston and Macraes. We are sure that the announcement will prove pleasing to Inspector Thompson's many friends, on whose behalf we may offer Mr Thompson very hearty conoratnlations. We may also compliment the. Defence Minister upon having done an act of justice to an old and valuable officer who was the victim of a great wrong perpetrated by Mr Bryce. In consequence of the telegraph office at Waimate being closed yesterday we were unable to obtain the results of yesterday's races at that place. The takings at the Horticultural Society's show yesterday amounted to less than L 9, a sum, we regret to say, beneath the Society's anticipations, and much less than it deserved. It'is to be hoped that the public's patronage to-day will be such as to compensate for the smallneas of yesterday's financial resu't. The show is well worth seeing, and affords a'pleasant variety in the day's entertainment
