ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

A HARDSHIP. (to the editor of the oamartj mail.) Sir, —Some few months ago letters appeared in your journal and the Timaru Herald commenting on tho inconvenienco travellers were put to in getting refresh ments at Studholme Junction on account of there being no entrance from tho station to the hotel. At this place there seems to be the unusually largo number of six rows of barbed wire in the fence, and persons wishing to satisfy tho cravings of the inner man must perform a dangerous acrobatic feat before they oan do so. I think that tho Railway Department should study the comfort of travellers and allow the proprietor to make a proper ontranco. I am, &c., Traveller. VERY CURIOUS. TO THE EDITOR OF TUB OAMARU MAIL. Sir,—l see in last night's Mail that Mr ■ Lethaby applied to the Council for permission, and fixed an umbrella in front of his shnp as a sign, or trade mark, about 10 feet from tho ground. I suppose this kind pcrmiasion was given very readily, a3 there were no umbrella menders in the Council just then. I recollect in December last that Mr Symington, a grocer in Thames-street, having placed a canister over his doorway, was refused permission to keep it there, although it was fixed about 16 feet above tho path ; and ho had to pull it down again. But then, you see, Mr Editor, there were four grocers in thp Council at that time. How unfortunate for Symington's golden canister. How curious that-Lethaby's shop happens to belong to the Mayor. But the Mayor is not the people, you know, any more than Jones of the Mail is not the people. I am, &c., Cunio.
