A vacancy having occurred in tho representation of Cambridgeshire in tho Houbo of Commons, owing to tho resignation of tho senior Liberal momber (Sir Henry Brand, ex Speakor, who has boon olovated to tho Poorago), an eloclion took placo, and rosulted in the oleotion of Mr Thornhill, tho Consorvativo candidate, by a large majority over his Liberal oppouont. An oleotion also took placo yosterday, and rosulted in tho return of a Conservative candidato for the representation of Huntingdonshire, where Sir Robort Pool was returnod iin tho Liberal interest.

It has transpired that Franco jioi olaimed an indemnity from China for the expenses of the Tonquin campaign, tho amount being fixed at a minimum of six million pounds sterling.
