GREYMOUTH. December 8. The rush to the Seventeen Mile Beach continues in spite of the unfavorqKLp weather, and miners- speak well of prospects. A very rich reef was strtf. t" on Saturday in the New River Lyell. The sluicing claims at jNelsoii Creek, opened by the Hockstetter race, are yielding splendidly. One claim for the last eight months has averaged 100 ounces of retorted gold per month, among four men.

WELLINGTON. December G. The Post states to-night that the Bank of England has undertaken to float the whole of the loan at L'J7 10s, with interest .■at 5 per cent. Amongst the amendments in the Assessment Bill, made last night, was one increasing the exemption from L3OO to LSOO. The mail steamer with the London mails of November left San Francisco for Auckland on the 24th ult., contract date. The Australia, with the November Colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 2nd inst., two days in advance of due date. Mr. Fish has been served with a copy of the writ in connection with the attempt to oust him from the Mayoralty. Sailed—Waitaki, for LytteltonThe whole of the passengers ex Dunedin and Wanganui were landed to-day, Frank Walfc, apprentice, and William Felton, seaman, of the ship Hermione, were charged with embezzling cargo' and carrying a naked light in the hold 'during the voyage from London. They were tried before the Court to-day. Walfe was sentenced to eight weeks' imprisonment, and Felton to sixteen weeks', with hard labor. CHRISTCHURCH. December fl. A good many persons are enrolling themselves in the company being formed to establish settlement on the Waimate Plains. - - About 10 o'clock last night a man named David Hineman, working at the dock works, Lyttelton, was found by his brother lying near- the works in a state of insensibility, with a large wound right across his forehead. The man was at once taken to the casual ward, where Drs. Macdonald and Rouse were soon in attendance, and it was found that he had sustained serious injury, the skull being fractured. The man's brother says that the injured man went out with one of the horses about 8 p.m., and he is of opinion that the unfortunate man must have been thrown, and so met with the injuries. The man is now lying in a very precarious condition. December 8. A report was current here on Friday night and Saturday morning that the missing ship Knowsley Hall had put into Wellington, dismantled.
