The inquest on Closs resulted in a verdict of accidental death. It is rumored in town that Sir Julius Yogel has cabled out that he has arranged with the Rothschilds to float the loan as soon as the Bill is passed. July 23. An interesting case was discussed in Banco to-day. At public meeting held at South Dunedin during the tramway agitation, one Councillor, it isalleged, used defamatory words in speaking of the action of a brother Councillor. The question at issue is whether the meeting, being attended by a few other persons than burgesses, was privileged. An inquiry into the stranding of the Benares is going on at Port Chalmers this afternoon.

PORT CHALMERS. July 22. Arrived Arawata, for the .Bluff; sailed—Barque Clyde, for Newcastle. As the ship Benares was towing out of the port yesterday she struck on tlie bar, and rhe tow rope getting adrift from the p.s. Koputai, she canted broadside on between the north and sonth channels. An effort was made fo tow her out stern foremost, which failed, and after dragging away at her for 4 hours the tug returned to port for assistance. At 2.10 a.m. to-day she was dragged into deep water and taken up to the powder grounds, where she anchored at 3.20. Eighteen inches of water was found in the well, and, since then, she has been making from G to 7 inches per hour. Gangs of men have been sent off to relieve the crew. She will have to be discharged and docked.

CHRISTCHURCH. July 23. . Thomas Desmond has been fined L 3, or in default of payment to suffer fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labor, for kissing a married woman in Tuam-street yesterday.

Mr. Garrick told the Bench that after searching a number of authorities he could find nothing to support him in carrying on the cases against the fish hawkers any further. The test case against Thomas Morrison consequently fell through. Proceedings could be taken by tho police ordnance to try the right of fish hawkers to obstruct the thoroughfare.
