* [from OUR owts CORRESPONDENT. J _ «. Dunedin, Thursday. FIRES. There have been four fires at Waikouaiti tliis week. Ellison and Peacock, at the Maori Kaik, lost five stacks, which were insured in the New Zealand office for £248. At Shag Valley three stacks burnt. This week's "Gazette " contains several offers of reward for the conviction of recent stack-burners in the northern districts. THE WASTE LANDS.BOARD. At the Board meeting yesterday, Mr. Strode called attention to a paragraph in the Superintendent's letter to Sir Julius Vogel, in which the former accuses the Colonial Government of attempting to coerce the Board ;.n respect to the recent block sales. Mr. Strode said he considered the statement uncalled for, and an insult to the Board individually, and called upon the Superintendent to make good his words. Messrs. Bastings and Butterworth followed in a similar strain. Mr. Thomson said, though he was a servant of the Colonial Government, they had never in any way attempted to coerce him now or before. He considered the Superintendent's remark aimed at himself. He knew the General Government were as much opposed to the big sale to Mr. Clark, but in that case they said nothing. The Board passed a resolution denying the allegation. Mr. Reid was not present at the meeting. _____^__
