FAULTY WIRING

Trouble In Old Cars POINTS FOR~MOTORISTS

The wiring of the electrical equipment on cars is liable to suffer from the effects of oil, heat, dampness and other difficulties of the peculiarly difficult conditions under which it has to work.

Friction and chafing are a frequent cause of trouble especially where the wires are allowed to hang loosely over some part of the frame. This applies especially to the main leads from the battery and to the cables. to the lamps. . Another point at which trouble may be expected is where joints have been made m the wires or additional leads tapped m. This should be avoided whenever possible as it, almost invariably leads to tx-ouble. If it must be done, care should be taken to see that the join is made as perfect as possible and the wires should always be soldered together.

High tension leads are particularly liable to give trouble and the insulat.ion will often be found to be cracked and perished, due to old age and the heat to which these wires are always more or less exposed. Battery box connections are often neglected although the presence of acid m the battery box rapidly sets up corrosion. The clamps or taper plugs should be thoroughly cleaned, bolted up tight and covered with grease to retard corrosion. Remember that ordinary spirits are not suitable for electrical connections. Resin or one of the special brands of flux should be used for this work.
