A GIRL'S GUILT

— — — ../ Robbed Employer "WORKED" BOOKS FOR BIG SUM (From "Truth's" South Auckland Rep.) With head bent m shame and obviously ■ suffering under great stress, a slim, attractive -looking . girl of 24 years, named Janet Easton, sat m the Hamilton Magistrate's Court, last week, while Detective Culloty led evidence supporting five charges of dishonesty. She had been employed as a clerk by the Hamilton branch of the Electrical Construction Company of New Zealand, and the charges included four of theft and one of forgery. The alleged defalcations totalled £166/19/4. The girl pleaded guilty to the charges, but she did not know what she had done with the money. RECEIPTS FAKED It seems, that she was employed by the company from March to September at a weekly wage of £2, to keep books. Her duties included the posting up of the ledger, the accepting of accounts, and the issuing- of receipts, together with general office work: The accused had, however, got into the habit, when she felt she required a little "ready" for herself of issuing receipts without entering them up m the office records. On one occasion she went to the length of altering the carbon copy of a receipt from £32 to £22, converting the balance of £10 to her own use. Evidence was given to show that when taxed with the offence by officers of the company, accused admitted her guilt, explaining that instead of putting he money through the ledger, she had put it into her pocket. LITTLE PRESENTS Officials of the company said they had failed to notice anything m the way of the girl's attire or expenditure on herself that might have- indicated that she was living beyond her means. In a, statement to the police she said she did not know what she had done with the money, although she had bought little presents with some of it. She was committed for sentence.
