GISBORNE CONTINGENT

Sons of Autumn at Avondale

HOW WILL THEY FARE?

(From "Truth's Special Auckland Rep.) . When Automne came north from Gisborne last spring: and captured both the Avondale Stakes and the handicap juvenile event on the second day, quite a lot of critics were inclined to put those victories down to the fact that he was more "ready* than his opponents.

Then a few; weeks after the son of Autumn came along again from the East Coast and gathered m the Stakes at Ellerslie. . This sent his stock up some, but unfortunately he contracted a cold which prevented him fulfilling other two-year-old engagements, and he did not meet -the best of the other juveniles as the season advanced. However, he can lay claim to retiring as an undefeated two-year-old. Now much interest is taken m his displays at Avondale, and if looks go for anything he has furnished well, and his showing at the suburban fixture should settle all doubts as to his real promise. In a five furlong sprint with Mimetic last Saturday morning, the .Gieborne

candidate fared well, and though Trainer Goscombe states that Automne. has not got through a great deal of galloping on the track he admits that the three-year-old and others have had a great beach down Gisborne way to help fit them for future engagements. Besides Automne, both Automaton and Ngawati (two two-year-olds by Autumn) appear to have received the right attention from Trainer Goscombe, as their three furlong sprint outside the course proper at Avondale last Saturday Indicated. > J. Barry will probably be found the pilot of Automne and Automaton at Avondale, and if Ngawati, the second string from Gisborne, starts m the Stakes, Jockey Mcllroy may be found m the saddle.
