The sensation of Saturday's Kosehill meeting m Sydney was the defeat of Manfred by The Hawk m the Hill Stakes at weight-for-age, for Manfred was a three to. one on favorite, while The Hawk's sole preparation for, the race. was one three furlong sprint v and a little road work. The Martian gelding made Manfred and company look li&e a, lot of common hacks, and over the final half-f urlon£ was never out of a canter. .^

Exaggerated reports as to the super-] excellence of Manfred frightened The Hawk's owner, Jack' Cameron, whose sole wager on the race was £350 to £50, but Manfred was never able to make the Martian gelding stretch out at his top. :_, . . This will give some idea or just 1 how good The Hawk really is. He will be a much improved , horse a fortnight hence, and promises to make the best of them step lively m the weight-for-age events.
