_: ; «» , Magistrate Orr- Walker, of Wellington, is falling into line with Magistrates m other parts of New Zealand, who have found fines to have little deterrent effect m "drunk m charge of a motor-car" charges. Lately he made it known that m future he would have seriously to consider the question of imprisonment. A twenty pound fine recently imposed and a couple of tenners had not stopped, these charges coming forward. The case under notice was that of a young nianj Leslie Thomas Lean, who
dismounted from his motor -lorry at 1 a.m. after a smoke concert arid hilariously sought nourishment at a pie-cart. Incensed at a delay he damaged the cart, instead of a pie, and tore down a curtain valued at £3. Insult was added to injury when he replied m abusive, and obscene language to the protesting pieman.
Then, leaping to his lorry he drove gaily away, pursued by a sergeant and two constables, who, apprised by the now infuriated pieman In a neighboring station, "quickly commandeered a car m the vicinity. It was only on the third call of his » pursuers that the fly-by-night deigned to halt.
Fines totalling £25 with witnesses' expenses and Court costs were imposed m this case, and the man's driver's license was endorsed.
