While Cameron Charles Alexander Smith (aged 20) was an hotel, porter at the Cafe de Paris,. Palmerston North, he. stole... some commercial traveller's samples, -valued at £37. Henry Leo Bulford (aged 25), an electrician, of Palmerston North, disposed of the haul for £5. Each with a list of previous convictions, : two young men pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Stout, at the Palmerston North Court, of theft and receiving respectively. Detective-Sergeant Quirke stated that Bulford's parents were decent people. He had been m trouble before m 1922. Smith came from Australia twelve months ago, and was recently convicted of theft. In his own interests the latter desired reformative detention. ' . "You have had a .chance before," said, the Magistrate to Bulford, after scanning his list. "You will be convicted and sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour, while •Smith, who has made this theft his second m a month, will receive- twelve months' reformative detention." . ..
