RING RECORDS

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

"Puni" (Ai-apuni): K.O.'d m first round by Jim Flynn m 1917. Bouts at Exhibition. 1 Murray Recommended for One. It was suggested m last' week's issue that Les Murray should be a contestant m one of the three big bouts to be staged at the Exhibition m Dun,eolin, and Mr. Scott Colville, the director of amusementSi is making a recommendation to that effect to the Otago Association. . ; In the , course of conversation with our Dunedin representative during the week he expressed the opinion that the matching of Les and Charley Purdy m the initial contest for the "Truth" Belt would be a big draw.

Palmerston Doings. Chatty Letter. - ' | The secretary of the Manawatu Box- i ing Club writes: < . ■ i "Just a line to 'let you- know .we- are still going strong. Our recoi-d of > four wins and one flraw at Dannevirke was good going out of five bouts. Our winners were Slater Hayes (light),, F. Nesbit (bantam), W. Walden (welter)-. Eddie Downs (light) drew. Theri professional Derry Clinton added the main; bout to the credit of Palmerston. -

Claims Prior Right. To Meet Blackburn. Carl Calloway writes: Some time ago I fought a-, close decision with McDonald, present middleweight champion, m a'flfteen round bout, and since then I have challenged Clarrie Blackburn for his welter title, which Blackburn has accepted. I notice m your boxing notes where Trowern has also challenged Blackburn for the title. With all due z-espect to Trowern's ability as a fighter I feel that I am as much entitled to the first match with Blackburn for the title as any other \velter m New Zealand, and would be pleased to have a match with Trowern at lOst 71b (welterweight limit), the winner then to be matched against Blackburn for the welterweight championship of New Zealand.

Carterton's Tourney. Next Saturday Night. The Carterton Boxing Club has arranged to hold a tournament on Auguat 29, and the y competitors have been matched as follows: G. Henderson (Carterton) v. D. Corlett (Carterton); H. H. Kelly (Martinborough) v. 35. Carrick (Masterton) ; E. Douns (Oarterton) v. Papps (Masterton). The star bouts of the evening will be six two-minute i-ounds: .Gardener (Masterton) v. W. Greathead (Wellington) ; Johansen (Masterton) v. Firth (Martinborough) ; Leith (Martinborough) v. Stewart (Carterton) ; D. Hart (Carterton). v. B. Blatchford (Carterton). Wanganui Awake. Tourney Proposed. Boxing enthusiasts at Wanganui have decided to replace the more or less defunct association with a new body. A wise selection of officers appears to have been made and from the number of members already joined up

the prospects of success look bright. Mr. Leo Fromoht, the secretary of the association, is a real live: wire. In all probability an amateur tourney will be held on or about September 10 (the night of the first day of the. Wangauui spring meeting).

Otago's Fleet Tourney; None of the Sailors Fit. In conjunction with the finals of its novice tournament the Otago Association last, week staged several bouts m which men from, the visiting U.S.A. destroyers took part, but none of them was fit enough .to see out a strenuous mill. In an exhibition with a diminutive Filipino named Mbnteclaro, Instructor Ussery showed that he knows all about the game and that he would be hard to beat when wound up. ■'.".. .'. The recognised comedian of the fleet had a ringside seat, and brightened the bouts.with a wealth of witty advice to ..the , contestants and the. "bo •in'the' evening, siiit; 1' . ■ ,; ,

Otago's Next. Probably McDonald-Williams. . Although the Otago Association cannot get the use of His Majesty's Theatre again until October 6 the match committee is not losing any time, and is looking round for suitable opponents to match on that date. Some of the members would like to get Lachie McDonald and Merv Williams. New Zealand Champs, Ghristchurch Next Week. The New Zealand amateur championships will be fought m Christchurch next Tuesday, Wednesday and

Thursday. The talent engaged; is the best got together since before the war, and the meeting- should be a memorable one. An Association. ' V, For Referees and Judges. Last April "Truth" put forward the suggestion that the referees In . New Zealand should form themselves into a body for the good of the game. At that time we. pointed out that there were a number of alleged- referees controlling bouts who, if it came to an examination, would ' never -be - allowed any nearer the ring ■ than the pit. • -...■■■•<•'■ • •• , ■• The following- remit is. .to. be. discussed at the annual meeting of ' the New Zealand Association to be held at Christchurch next Tuesday: . "That a Referee and Judges' Association be formed, to be affiliated to the New Zealand Boxing Association." May the association be born. •

"Threw Little Light." Records of Old Council. Elsewhere on this page mention is made of the Christchurch cranks who are trying to start a boxing association of their own. The annual report of the New Zealand Boxing Association has th© following: "Records from Old Council. — Although the council assumed office m August it was November before the old council finally han.ded over all records. It will readily be seen that without these records it would be a difficult task to ascertain the standing of associations m relation to the council. The records supplied threw little light on the subject, and your hon. treasurer had to seek the assistance of a sporting writer to compile anything liko a complete list of contests held. We are reluctant to place on record our sense of keen disappointment that after twenty years of control the old council has left the scantiest of details of the history of tho association during that period."

•And" now those who were m charge for twenty years want to have another The Return. At Groymoutli. The return of the Les. Murray — Reg. Trowern fight will most likely be fought at Greymouth on October 24. The title will not be at stake on this occasion. ' ■.-.. Wants To Come Over. To Meet Purdy. , Pat Connors has received, a letter from Jimmy Allen, who is desirous of coming to New Zealand. Allen it will be remembered , fought . a draw with Purdy during the latter's brief sojourn m Sydney. ,

Parker can get the Hastings Association to match him (Parker) "Good Old Sport" alone knows. The following illustrates who is to blame the nonmatching of Parker and Young:, The long clanging of the fire bell m Hastings on two occasions last week woke up the whole populace with the,- exception of the Boxing Association. These modern Rip Van Winkles still enjoy an undisturbed slumber. Some eight weeks ago there was a rumor of the annual general meeting being held but it only turned out to be one of the Rips muttering m his sleep. - The. members are now going to take a hand m matters, having decided to call a meeting over the heads of the sleeping heads. . ....... With the Dannevirke Association now going again, and with three associations within such a close radius, the best of talent could be obtained. In the Bay at the present time we have Elmour, Dwyer, Parker and Hay. From the above it . can be seen that Parker is not to blame for the falling through of the fight. And as to Parker being afraid^rot! Due Shortly. Snov/y Baker. Snowy Baker, who is at. present m Australia with the Pauline Frederick Company, is expected to visit New Zealand when that company comes over very shortly. He will bs. welcome.

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiimtiiiiiimimmMiMiiiimiitiliiMiiiHtiiiiiiiiiiii For Gisborne, Elmour Matched. Dick Elmour, who made such a good impression m Napier, has been matched to meet Jack Heeney at Gisborne on September 12. ' 1% Sydney. Well Known Trainer. ' This week I received a couple of letters from Bob Sims, well known m training circles m New Zealand. Bob is now domiciled m Sydney and he wishes to be remembered., to. Les. Murray, Clarrie Blackburn,, and ..all the other boys m the game, ,
