"Habitual" By Request
By getting himself declared an habitual criminal, William Jackson (39), now serving m a New South Wales gaol, reckons he can earn £300. At the Sydney Quarter Sessions he startled Judge Edwards with a request to be promoted to the habitual status. Jackson's application was made under the Amended Crimes Act and his qualifications for the desired honor lay m his series of convictions for stealing carpenters' tools. , After serving as an habitual criminal, said Jackson, who is a competent tradesman, he would draw at least £300 for his work m gaol. "This is news to me," said his Honor. "I did not think so much money could be made m gaol." The request was complied with.
