RACING

Next Wednesday and Thursday all roads will lead to Hawera. The Egmont Racing Club's Winter Meeting 1 Is always a popular one, and this year will prove no exception. While the entries In the steeplechase events are not as large as might be expected, the acceptances are sure to fill well, and the fields will give the speculator food for thought. Indeed If they accept as freely as they have entered, one of the races wiJl have to be run in divisions. There is nothing to complain about in the flat races. There ure some likely looking youngsters coming along:. E. Murtagh has in hand a Blsogne— i Gwello two-year-old that looks like doing great things. Dan Barry, who bred Matinee, has *. likely looking full sister at Now Plymouth. I Dan Moraghan has also taken charge of a two-year-old full sister to Cross--fire by Campfire— Sylvandale, bred by ithe New Plymouth sport. K. Whittle. Sanoflre. the five-year-old Campfire — Eduam gelding, has again been put Un work by W. O. Anstis. The Hawera jockey. M. McCarten. -s at present at the head of the winning riders' list. The Hawera boys. S. Anderson and <M. conway. aro also well up among the apprentices. ■ Thesuian will not race again this se-iHon havliiir b*en thrown out of wnri?. It I* a pity he did not strike Ms ton form earlier, but that accident ut Trentham in the spring put him back. _ It has been reported that Thesplau u< to bo raced in Australia in the spring, but Mr. George Currle has stated that the horse will not be seen tw action on the other side until the initumn, Present intentions are to run the son >jC Absurd at the Wantranui spring

meeting and later on if he shows a return to his best form the chances are that he will be given a chance to distinguish himself in the weight-for-age events at Raodwick in the autumn.

W. Dwyer was in Wanganui on Friday and purchased Alaric, ..the four-year-old gelding by San Fran — Grey Dolly. Alaric has given^ evidence of possessing a lot of pace on the track and though he has not been up long, he ran well both at Feilding and Awapuni. If he makes the improvement -which might reasonably be expected Alaric should prove cheap at the price said to have been paid for him, viz., £250.

Empyrean and "War Jj>oan were schooled over the tall timber on Saturday, when the former shaped surprisingly well for a novice at the game. War Loan jumped fairly well.

Moulu and Naughty went around together over country. The latter gave a splendid display of jumping, but Moulu did not seem to care about it and baulked at the back. He will probably do all right in company when the pace is on.

It looks as if Mr. B. T. Bennett should pick up a race or two over the big sticks with Naughty, as she jumps excellently and has a fair share of pace. - v Khartoum came a nasty cropper on the track the other morning: when being schooled over the big country. He struck the first obstacle hard and Injured his chest so severely that he could not be taken from the course for a couple of days. It is unlikely he will be able to race until' next season, which is very bad 'luck" for his owner, Mr. Ben Bennett, .as the King Rufus gelding looked likely to be as good as e-ver, which meant that ,he must have picked up a decent stake or two.

It is understood, that T. Quinlivan Is bringing- Quest, Tigerland, and En Route to Wanganui for the winter meeting.

The Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting iwill toe held on June 2 and 4. Nominations close with the secretary, Mr. O.' D'Ath, at,-8 p.m. on Friday, May 11. It should tie remembered that the telegraph office closes at 5 p.m.
