"Didn't Give His Missus a Fair Spin." Howard Elliott, a plausible, wordy person — ;biit not the celebrated rev. gent.— was charged before Magistrate Bartholomew, S.M., at the Police Court, Dunedin, with failing to provide his wife and four children ,with adequate maintenance. Bertha, his missus, said they had lived m the North Island till the home was broken top owing to the children's health. Howard went to look for work, and she brought the children to Dunedin last December. She had £4 4s when she arrived, and since January she had only £30 from Howard. Howard admitted sending no boodle since May, and also having- spent more than a fair portion m gambling. "In fact, sir," said defendant. "I have not given the. missus a fair spin. But I am willing 1 to make it up with her and do my best." The Magistrate advised them to make, it up, or he would make an order. Thereupon, Howard and Bertha put their heads together, and, after the usual palaver, explanations and resolutions, a Jiappy re-union was arrived at. The magistrate, however, requested payment of the expenses incurred by the Crown m bringing Howard home to the bosom of his betterhalf, and discharged defendant
