THE EMPRESS THEATRE.

TTh« Bhopwalker." There will be a big double bill at the Empress Continuous Pictures next week. First of all, No. lof the new Chaplin Mutual films will be shown. Cheerful Charles will be seen masquerading as "The Shopwalker." The scene is laid m a slap-up American de- | partmental store, which boasts, besides a demoniacal manager and absconding cashier, a moving staircase and the funniest shopwalker on carth — Cheerful Charlie Chaplin. This picture is the best that Chaplin has ever grivon us of his wonderful clowning. There's not a "let-up" m the laughs from start to finish, and also let it be said that there's not the faintest suggestion of vulgarity or the tiresome 7| slapstick" business which mars many American films. The other big picture will be a Famous Players' film, "Tho CommandIng Officer." It Is a stirring photo adaptation of the celebrated military romance. The plot centres on a false charge being made against the young and beautiful wife of the commanding officer. The slander grows, as most slanders do, but eventually,/ by a smart dramatic twist, the Blunderer Is confounded and truth prevails. The difficult and sweotly pathetic role of tho misguided young wife Is played by Alice Devoy, the well-known English and American ingenue. A well-woven counter-plot adds to the Intensity of the drama.
