THE GAME IN CANTERBURY.

Peter Cook is well under way with his training operations for the mill, with Jimmy Hagerty, at Christchurch, next month. Cook is m the capable hands of Kiyo Kamedo, who already has him m the "pink." Early this week ''Truth" saw Cook go nine willing rounds , with Ted McMinn, Jimmy Thompson and Frank Creer. S Teddy McMinn is m fine condition and put up a nice showing m his brief brush with Cook. Jimmy Thompson, who is to meet, George Olsen next month, entered, on his training stunt this week. Thompson has for some, time past been running a boxing school m Christchurch and m his preliminary training dust-up this week it was plain that continual instructing has strengthened his defence rather than his attack. This, will take a bit of rectifying before the mill with Olsen, but Jimmy has placed his school inthe hands of a competent deputy for the time being and is confident of a victory with Olsen. It will be remembered that Thompson beat Olsen m the first heat of the New Zealand Championships at Invercargill m 1911. Hagerty, "Truth" understands, is training at Timaru under the wing of Jack Fitzsimmons. Peter Cook will continue training m Christchurch until early next week when he will put up at Akaroa for topping off ■ purposes. • At a, meeting of the Christchurch Sports Club last week, the resignation of Mr. F. A. Hornibrook was accepted with regret and it was decided to place on record the . services he had rendered to the club and boxing generally. Frank ; Ellis, the New Zealand feather, now m Sydney, is willing to: meet Hagerty for a purse of £ 10.0 and £30 exes, if Jimmy will come down to 9st 31b. If Hagerty doesn't cotton on to making weight, Ellis reckoned "Hock" Keys should be matched m New Zea--land for a return match with Hagerty, ; as "Hock" is willing to come to NewZealand again. ■' -' Alf. with the winner of the Cook-Hagerty contest. 4 The Christchurch Sports Club's deliberations m connection with the Ver-nall-Ireland d^jst-up a few weeks ago, evidently was too fully reported to please that body and an edict has now been issued, shutting press reporters out from committee meetings. Popular little Jimmy Watson, who has recently started a fistic school m Sydenham, held an athletic evening last week! Jimmy $ias some likely boys who, under capable tuition, will doubtless?* soon make short work of championships. .
