MISS MACLACHLAN.

Scottish Prima Donna*

ITO be a: great singer is to wield a jjower far beycnib that of any sovereign, awl this is perhaps more true as regards Miss .Jessie Maclachlan than any great singer* of the present day. She Will Lc heard here, at the Town. Hall, Wellington, in-; a series, of Hires'. 'farewell' concerts, commencing on, August 29, and, the wonderful personality and ma.en.otic power of vocalisation with which she is endowed, cahnot fail to make her visit one to be remembered. Miss Maclachlan is ■full of the intensest patriotism ; she imbues the songs on her programmes— notably those of a warlike character wittii such' dramatic interest that her hearers are worked up to a pitch of enthusiasm which it 'is difficult to\ understand' . It is no uncommon . thing— on the contrary it often happens— to see the members of her audience on their 1 feet cheering wildly at the close of such songs a s "A Hundred Pipers," . "Scots 'Win a Hae," or "Blue Bonnets over the Border." But not alone m this particular 'branch of Celtic music does Miss Maclachlan excel. Scottish musis full of humor, and her interpretation of 'such songs as "C o min' thro' the Rye," "Whistle and I'll Come tae ye my "Lad," and-more particularly "The Laird o' Cockpen" are notable for 'their keen appreciation of the peculiar paukiness' which is their characteristic. On tlvis visit Miss Maclachlan has strengthened her company by the inclusion of. Mr Douglas Young, a Scottish tenor of whom report speaks highly.. With Mr John McLinden, a clever 'cellist, and' Me R. Buchanan as accompanist, the combination is an excellent. one<
