One can never mistake the country cock. He- gazes round with such- a wild look of incredulity at everything about him, you would think foe had just been hate-hod. These freckled cowspankers stalk into the show and are gulled on every hand. They buy this .tawdry trinket, that patent collarstud, and the other gorbung-raext-week talking-machine, besides filling up all interior recesses with countless varieties of sticky stuff, and invariably finish up witbi a fish supper. And they don't forget to gam-big away yot another bob at the show on a bit of the big cheese. It is about this cheese we have a couple of words to say. 'Taint everybody knows that the sale of tltis "Monster cheese loaded with coin" is illegal ; but the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral: Society know it very well. Did anyone notice that the fact of its existence this year was ao& blazoned forth as of yoro ; did no one ask why it was never mentioned m the ad-VJerJfcisements : and was nobody struck by the fact that even on the cheese itself there was no tell-tale placard ? For years pas"t this cheese has been a popular and paying feature of tbie winter shows. The legality, or otherwise, of selling it has never coone up, at least, not directly., The fact is that Auckland was 'having a show the other day, and, hearing of the success of- these monster cheeses iuDunedin, wrote to the authorities asking; permission to sell such- a cheese, "but t-lie reply stated that to sell cheese m the manlier m.eniioned. nvas ; to foiealMttie jaw^ -
