A ifewly-appointed stage-manager, decided to save expenditure wherever possible. Having discovered that two shillings had been set aside to purchase meat for eight cats, whose mission was to keen the theatre clear of rats, he decided to cut out, this expenditure. The staff protested, but the note the manager had attached to the order was too logical to bo refuted. It ran : “If the cats eat the rats, why the meat? If they don't cat the rats, why ttye cats?”
