THE OFFENDING BAKER
THE OLDEST TRADE. A fresh claim has been entered for the honour of being the oldest trade on earth. While speaking at the bakers and pastrycooks' conference last evening, the Minister for Industries and fonnnerre (Hon. A. D. McLeod) said that the baking trade Was
as old as history itself. In the book of Genesis mention was made of Abraham calling upon his spouse to prepare bread for tho feast of the Angels. “Even there is mention of the Magistrates who had to watch over tho bread-makers,” the Minister added, nmid laughter. “Ami later wo find mention of the offending baker who gave falso weight and who was burnt in his own oven.”
A voice from a delegate at the end of the long table came soft- and low: “Serve him lolly well right !”
