OVERWHELMING VICTORY

PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH ENDS WELLINGTON WIN BY 446 RUNS OTAGO DISMISSED FOR 174 Wellington have made an auspicious start in this season's series of Plunket Shield matches, gaining an overwhelming victory by 446 runs over Otago in the initial match, which concluded at the Basin Reserve yesterday morning. Wellington's two strikes realised 448 and 379 respectively, Otago could reach no further than 207 in their first innings, and were faced with the tremendous task of knocking up 620 on a crumbled wicket in order to stave off defeat, The Southerner's leading batsmen' did not fare too well, and when stumps were drawn on Wednesday, six wickets had fallen for 322. Upon resuming yesterday morning, Otago.; met disaster almost immediately, Zimmerman being sent back after scoring only a single. Blamires likewiso was unable to make a long stay, and Torrance could not survive the opening ball he received. Green, the visitors* keeper, who makes no claim to batsmanship, came to light with a forcing knock of 30, and H. C. Alloo, who carried his bat, shapeu soundly. However, after a fairly lucrative last wicket stand the end came at 174. Badcock was again a tower of strength with the ball, going through the remaining batsmen yesterday morning and winding up with seven wickets at a cost of 59 runs. ItolUngs held a couple of neat catches off the coach's trundling in the slips. THE GAMe"Tn _ DETAIL ZIMMERMAN MEETS DISASTER Bright sunshine and a fairly stiff southerly were the outstanding weather conditions when Otago resumed their tremendous task soon after eleven o'clock. Blamires (2) and Zimmerman (0) were the undefeated batsmen, and Blamires took strike to McGirr trundling with tho wind. The Otago skipper bagged a single and one ball sailed to the pickets for four byes. Zimmerman also collected a single. Badcock took up the attack against the wind and Blamires turned his third ball deftly to leg, the stroke producing three. The coach's next ball spelled disaster for Zimmerman, who presented Hollings with an easy catch m the slips. 135—7—1. BLAMIRES GETS LEG IN FRONT H. C. Alloo came in, but Blamires was not destined to make a lengthy sojourn, being sent back on an I.b.w. decision off Badcock with the addition of only three. 138—8—7. Torrance joined H. C. Alloo, who had just opened his scoring account. The veteran made the shortest possible of stays, however, following in Zimmerman's wake by snicking an easy chance off the first ball he received from Badcock. 139—9—0. LAST WICKET STAND Green was last man and spoilt Badcock's hat trick by getting the first ball he received away to the leg boundary. Alloo hooked McGirr neatly, the shot realising three, and Green followed -by carpet driving Badcock for a couple and a single. Tho 150 mark was reached by Green bagging a short single to leg off McGirr. Green was bringing to light a serviceable pull shot and succeeding in again dispatching Badcock to the leg boundary, running into doubles. ' Green was going great guns, and hit Badcock to the pickets twice in succession, sending 360 up. Facing McGirr, the Southern 'keeper drew applause by hooking the Hutt trundler over Lambert's head to the ropes twice in succession. The l«st wicket stand was proving lucrative, J7O being left behind and Green gaining the thirty mark. H. C. Alloo was content to hold his end up and did so creditably. COMES THE FINISH At 174 came the finish. Green playing one back into Badcock's hands at the northern end. The Southern ■'keeper, although not stylish* had put punch behind his shots, including five boundaries in his tally. 174—10—30. Details are as under:— WELLINGTON.
