£2O A YEAR TO V.C.

An act of heroism performed 4.5 years ago is recalled by the bequest of £2O a year to John Doogan, V.C., in the will of Major-General W. Vesey Brownlow, late Ist King’s Dragoon Guards, of Eveley, Bordon, Hants. During the Boer War of 1881 Private Doogan, who was sent to the then Major Brownlow, saw his officer, whose horse had been shot, dismounted among the Boers. He rode up, and though himself severely wounded, pressed the major to take his horse, receiving another wound while trying to induce him to accept it. Doogan was discharged on pension. Major-General Brownlow left £41,346.
