CALEDONIAN FAIR

AT THE TOWN HALL. The Wellington Caledonian Society is holding a three days’ fair in the Town Hall, which was opened last night by his Worship the Mayor, who was accompanied by Mrs Norwood, and received by the Chief (Mr Nimmo), Mr Mitchell. Mrs Stuart Wilson, Mrs McVicar, head of the ladies’ committee, and Mrs Clark. Mr Nimmo, in welcoming his Worship, thanked him for the keen interest he had always shown in tho society by tho fact that he was always willing to respond to any call to attend any public function. The object of tho fair was to raise funds towards the carnival the society intends holding cn the Kilbirnie Reserve, the whole object being to raise funds towards a building to be erected in the future to carry on the work of the society. This had been talked of for a long time, but this was the first step towards its realisation. Ho expressed the appreciation of the directors and members of the society with the council’s action in allowing the uao of the Kilbirnio Reserve. The Scots were proud of their Old Country, but also proud of the land of their adoption and of this fair city of Wellington, and it was always the policy of the society to do everything in its power to further any scheme for the good of the city. His Worship the Mayor spoke at some length of the splendid work carried out by the Society in recent years. It was a power for good in tho community, especially in its co-opera* lion with public bodies and with Us work for immigration. He stressed the necessity to bring the / right class * f emigrants to the country, and tho placing of them iii employment. The society had handled this work well, and be praised them for the assistance always offered to their fellow-countrymen on arrival in this country. His Worship wished the society every success and declared the fair open. Drum-Major Comric Smith presented Mrs Noiwood with a beautiful bouquet. There were a large number of stall*, all brightly decorated, and good business wins done during the evening. Miss Turner’s orchestra of some forty worformers rendered selections, and the Pipe Band was prej*enfc in full uniform and played the Mayor and Mayoress in The fair is to be continued to-night and to-morrow.
