Sir John Ross was a passenger froSB Lyttelton by the Wahine yesterday. Mr J. H. Treseder haa been appointed Deputy-Commissioner of Crown Lands and Deputy Chief Surveyor, Otago Land District. Mr W. E. Leicester returned to Wellington yesterday, after attending the sessions of the Supreme Court at Hamilton. Captain C. N. Reyne, R.N., ha* been appointed to H.M.S. Dunedin as chief staff officer to the Commodore commanding the New Zealand station. A motion expressing sympathy with Mr A. S&ndo in the loss of his wife was carried by the Lyall Bay School Committee, of which he is a member, at its last meeting. Mr James Hislop (Undor-Secretary for Internal Affairs) will leave Auckland by the Tofna to-day for a trip to the Islands, and later to Australia. Mrs Hislop accompanies him. Mr H. E. Stephens has been elected as producers’ representative for tlie Canterbury. Nelson, and Marlborough districts on the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board. Lieutenant-Colonel W. H. Cunningham. M.C., of Wanganui, is at Trentham commanding the camp of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment. Lieutenant S. Frickleton. V.C., is Colonel Cunningham’s adjutant. Councillor G. A. Troup has been appointed chairman of the Health Committee of the City Council, vice Councillor H. D. Bennett, who resigned from that position upon his appointment as chairman of the Works Conk mittec. Councillor Troup thus also becomes a member of the Finance Committee, which is composed of tho chairman of the other committees of the council. The funeral of the late Air Francis Sidey, formerly Mayor of Melrose, took place from his residence. Mein street, on Thursday afternoon, and was largely attended by relatives and friends. The chief mourners were Air Charles Sidey (son), and Messrs P. Muter. C. B. Redward, F. Burnell. H. E. "Wilson, and the Rev. W. Shircr (sons-in-law>. Among those present were the Alayor of Wellington (Mr C. J. B. Norwood! and the acting-town clerk (Air R. Tait). The Rev. W. Sliirer. officiated at the honse and the graveside.
