MURDER
STRYMANS GUILTY At the trial of the Belgian sea captain, Maurice Strymans, charged with the murder of Ruth Alma Brandt at a flat in Darlinghurst, Mr Meagher (for the defence) in his address to the jury asked the jury ta say that the shooting was accidental. Mr Coyle (for the Crown) said that Mr Meagher’s eloquence was the eloquence bred from a defence of despair. He said the theory of accident was an impossible one.
Several relatives of the dead woman burst into tears during the Crown Prosecutor’s address, and were assisted from the court. After half an hour’s retirement, the jury returned with a verdict of guiity of murder. Strymans was recommended to mercy. Strymans remained unmoved as the Chief Justice passed sentence of death. The prisoner had nothing to say.
