WELLINGTON CLUB ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP. The Wellington Chess Club’s annual championship tourney is rapidly approaching completion, only two more rounds and a few outstanding games having to be accounted for. A very close finish may be looked for, the position of the leaders being now as follows : Won. Lost. To play. Gyles, A. W 5 13 Mason, W. E 3 15 Taylor, E. S 44 1* 3 Barnes, R. J 31 11 4 Kelling, F. K 4 2 3 Anderson, G. P 31 21 3 Foulay, T 31 3} 2 Gyles has still to play Messrs Mason, Barnes and Anderson, and the games, Barnes v. Mason, Barnes v. Taylor, Taylor v. Anderson, and Mason v. Anderson are included in those that have to be fought out. It is, therefore, very hard to say at this stage whose chances are most fancied. Mr A. E. Jessup is leading in the club’s intermediate tourney, with an unbeaten score (4 —0). He is closely followed by H. J. Thompson 3—l, W. B. Clark 31—11, Mrs Gyles 2—2, and W. R. Bock 2—2.

In the contest for the junior championship the best tallies to date are: C. Glendav, 5 wins 1 loss; N. Doneghue 3—l; D. £\ McArthur, 3-1—1*; A. Taylor, 2 —l; and L. K. Doherty, 2\— '2l. There are sixteen competitors in’ the annual “Petherick” (handicap) contest. The following have made the best show, ing to date:—E. b. Taylor, 41—II; R. J. Barnes, s—l;5 —1; A. Taylor. 4—l; L. K. Doherty, 6—2; J. A. C, Barnes, 5—2; W. J. Fairburn, 51—31: Mrs Gyles, 31—31; and A. E. Jessup, 3—3.
