HOLDERS RETAIN TROPHY. HAMILTON, August 23. The Brown Shield contest took place at Hamilton before a poor attendance, owing to the threatening weather. "Hie South Auckland forwards were slow in settling down, and' Wanganui had the better finish in the early stages, although Thompson missed 1 an open goal Immediately after the commencement. Twenty minutes after the commencement Patrick passed to Black, who opened tho score for South Auckland. South Auckland, with tho wind in their favour, were having the best of play, Chalmers completely deceiving the Wanganui defence to shoot at Beckett, who let tho ball slip between his hands to slowly roll to the net. Tho game livened up in the second half, Cowan scoring for Wanganui ton minutes after resuming, and heavy raids were made on the South Auckland goal. Johnson, ihe homo outside left, owing to injuries, took no part in this half. Atfer 2r> minutes’ play the game ended with tho score*?: South Auckland 2, Wanganui 1, and is a fair indication. Cowan, Proudfoot and McCnilam were easily tho most outstanding for Wanganui, and Tait, Johnson and Chalmers for South Auckland. North Auckland are the next; challengers, and play at Hamilton on September lllh.
