WELUNGTON BEAT CHRIST’S BRILLIANT WINNING TRY BY TAIT HARD, FAST GAME Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 28. The annual inter-college tournament began in tine weather. Playing Christ’s College, Wellington pressed until fast following saw the ball go out at the half-way. Then the Wellington backs got away, but Tripe saved twice. The Wellington backs swept away, but the defence was sound. The College forwards took a hand and swift work saw Wellington penned in their twenty-firo. Hardie dodged right through the home team, only to be surely taken by Tripe. College sent play back, but Gei\ J y worked the blind and was hauled down just in tfme by Tripe. KELLY OPENS THE SCORE From a scramble on the College line Kelly went over for Wellington. Ramson missed with the kick. Again the Wellington backs attacked, arid again the defence was sound. Gentry, behind the Wellington scrum,I dummied his way past half tho College team, but Tripe again relieved. Repeated attacks by Christ’s College kept tho back defending, but Ramson and Gentry sent tho boll back. By fine play on the blind side from a kick the College forwards secured and took the ball to the opposite end with a fine passing rush. Wellington took a turn, but again Tripe was prominent in defence. Wellington pressed, but a rush by the backs broke down at Ramsden and the home forwards transferred play. Then Tripe ran well up and passed to Appleby, who was pushed out. A penalty to College saw Johnston miss narrowly. Half-time sounded with the score: Wellington 3, Christ’s College 0. CHRIST’S SCORE TWICE On the resumption Newton, following up a good kick, was tackled by Black on the Wellington line, and Williams wriggled over. Johnston missed with the kick at goal. Both sets of backs were prominent in attacking movements. A rush by Christ’s College backs looked dangerous, but Gully took Williams in great style. Newton worked the blind to Williams, who slid over for a bright try. Johnston failed to convert. Christ’s College 6, Wellington 3. The Christ’s College backs had been improving right through the game, and were always dangerous. Their next rush, however, saw Tait intercept at half-way, and swerving down the line, he beat four men to score a brilliant individual try beneath the posts Ramson converted. Wellington 8, Christ’s College 6. College attacked again, but Wellington cleared to half-way. Gentry gave the ball to his backs, and runs by Ramson and Te Moana saw College compelled to force. A Wellington attack" was stemmed by the home forwards, who swept back to the Wellington line, where continued attempts failed to penetrate the defence College pressed again and again, but luck was against them. In the last minute of play Appleby, Wilson and Newton failed in attempts to pot goals. The final score was — Wellington College 8 Christ’* College 6

In the second game play was ragged ,Yom the start, with Nelson having •lightly the better of things, till the "Wanganui forwards, headed by Henley, •wept the ball into opposition territory. A rush saw the ball travel out to Donald, who flashed over at the corner. Bunny goaled. From the ruck Gardner snapped up and pot in a brilliant dash before passing to Pomare, who transferred to Ellingham, the latter beating a man and scoring wide •nt. Bunny goaled. Wanganui swept back to the attack, but a force gave Nelson relief. From a scramble the Nelson forwards transferred play to half-way, where Newman worked the blind side to Buddie, who ran 40 yards before being well taken by Bunny. Wanganui came again, and Bunny dropped a magnificent goal. At half-time the score was: [Wanganui 14, Nelson 0. In the second half the play was more even. The final score was : Wanganui Coll.
