MENTALLY DEFECTIVE CHILDREN

(To the Editor, "N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—l regret to notice that Dr Truby King in his Parliamentary report asks that mentally defective children, should be removed from the care of liis own profession in the mental hospitals. I was officially behind tlie scenes in one such hospital for five months, and I know that the children there were literally as happy as the day is long. Thqy were made pets of by the quieter patients, among whom they were placed, were well fed, and were not allowed to be chastised. Let well alone. Parents of such children, whom it is the fashion to allude to for some reason as unhappy, are advised to put their pride in their pocket, and insist on their children remaining in a properly regulated big institution, with a resident' medical man as head. That is the only method by which they can be saved from more or less injustice and cruelty during (the long years which they may have to spend under control.—l am, etc., CONSTANCE CLYDE. Auckland.
