“PILGRIM’S PROGRESS”
SECOND EDITION DISCOVERED EXPERTS DISAGREE ON VALUE. Australian and N Z Cable Association. LONDON, August 15. A sensation was caused in the book world when a copy of “Pilgrim’s Progress” sent, to the saleroom by a descendant of Oliver Cromwell, who was unconscious that, it had any value, was on examination alleged by experts to be the first edition. On this understanding it was sold to Bernard Quaritch, a dealer, for £6BOO. The next day It was returned, on account of the discovery of five lines of errata on the last page, which are not present in the only copy of the first edition known. It is said that tho present copy is of the second issue. The final stage of the incident is the announcement of a resale to the same buyers at a lower price, though the experts are divided on the question of whether the errata increase or decrease ths value of the hook.
