Speaking at the Institute- of Politics on the Washington Disarmament Conference, which he characterised as “a piece of British strategy,” ReaiAdmiral John A. Rodgers said: “The conference was called because Britain objected t-o the United States having a merchant fleet and a navy bigger than her own Her representatives held out as a bait the idea of the settlement of the Ear East as their ob jective, together with the abrogation of the Japanese Alliance.” He said that the result of the conference was that the treaty was destroyed, which had previously threat, ened American supremacy of the seas, but it had left England as the leading sea Power, “for it is developing a cruiser class, wb-icli the treqtv left unlimited. Further, it released England from her Japanese alliance, tv hi oh Canada would no longer tolerate.”
