THE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING

LINCOLN STEEPLECHASE PROVIDES SOME THRILLS LUCULLENT PULLS OFF HURDLES GLORIOUS AND EXCITING FINISHES ON FINAL DAY By Telegraph.—Special to “Time*/* CHRISTCHURCH, Auguat 14. The Canterbury Jockey Club concluded its Grand National fixture in perfect weather. The course was in good order, and there a large attendance. Good fields were seen out in each of the contests, and some of the most interesting finishes of the gathering were witnessed.

Rovy O’More was sent out favourite for the Longbeach High Weight Handicap. He gave trouble at the barrier, and when the field was dispatched he declined to move away on terms with them, being hopelessly left. Had his veteran rider been able to have hit him hard enough , Ayrovski would have won. As it was ho suffered defeat by only a short head. Hillation stumbled when he had gone two furlongs and dropped back. He was lame when he returned to the enclosure. Royal Dispatch was well placed for seven furlongs, hut that concluded his effort. Gay Queen was never really dangerous, and Lady f'oinet was under the whin two furlongs down the running. The winner, •Rangi sure. He is a solid sort. NEVER IIEADED King Abbey led all the way in the Aylesbury Steeplechase, and won easily. Over the last half-mile Osteiman tried to catclf him, but he made h's job more difficult by hitting tlio second to last fence. He finished second, being four lengths behind the winner. Blue Hall was going well when he faltered at the kennels double, and this knocked a lot of pep out of him. Ho battled on to secure third prize, but he was a long way behind King Abbey and. Osterman at the finish. Flourish fell at the second fence. North Inch went out at the third obstacle. Message Boy lost his rider, at liv. last jump, and Mazama put himself out of court at the second fence from home. Up to two miles and a halt King Abbey is just a useful horse. Ho is a brilliant jumper, and has a good bit of speed, but lacks stamina. His best journey is two miles. A DESPERATE STRUGGLE The Heathcote Handicap provided the greatest finish of the meeting, no fewer than six horses being engaged in a desperate struggle for supremacy. As the line was reached Rouex had his head in front of Warhaven, who beat Il'ahine by half a head for second mcney. Pink Note was inches away fourth, and Kilbronsyth was about a neck farther away, with Sun Up only inches behind him and The Harp on his girths. From an even dispatch Sun Up was first to reach the front, and Kilbronsyth lost a couple of lengths and his position. 'While Sun Up and Royal Diadem were showing the way to Warhaven, Kilbronsyth was busy making up his lost ground. He reached fourth place two furlongs from home, and at the false rail, where Royal Diadem was beaten, he joined Sun Up in the lead. Then. Warhaven, Tuahine, Rouex, and The Harp swooped down upon them and. cut them out of the money. AXLE JUST MISSED Axle essayed to win all the way in the Styx Hurdle Handicap. With a mile covered he was ten lengths clear of Uleaborg, who was racing just in front of Glument and Wharncliffe. Even two furlongs from home it looked as if nothing would catch Axle, bus nearing the last hurdle Uleaborg closed on him, and, once over the battens, Uleaborg outstayed Axle over tho serious part of the contest. Wharncliffe finished better than Glument, and gained third money. Prince Ferouz began well, and was in third place at the stand, where he ran off. Red Kriss and Radiac finished a long way behind their opponents. LUCULLENT’S GREAT RACE Ten acceptors faced the starter for the Sydenham Hurdles, for which Grown Coin, Black Cruiser, and Sayanora were the popular fancies. After Black Cruiser and Little River had led for a mile and a quarter Little River dropped back, and Dubious, Lucullenit, Rangatahi, and Crown Coin commenced a forward move. Three furlongs from homo Dubious was on terms with Black Cruiser, the pair going on from Lucullent, Crown Coin, and Rangatahi. Turning for home Rangatahi and Crown Coin ran up to Black Cruiser, Dubious, and Lucullent, but that was the conclusion of their effort, for they were both well beaten when the last fenoe was accounted for. The final tussle rested between Black Cruiser and Lucullent, the latter beating his rival by a length. Dubious was a similar distance away third. Ranga-' tahi finished fourth, and Crown Coin was fifth. Dubious raced as if he should soon pay a dividend. Sayanora fell at the mile post. He was going well at the time-. UNLUCKY THIRTEEN IN LINCOLN There was a big pool for the Lincoln Steeplechase, Peter Maxwell, Fireblight, Charlatan, Master Peter, and Frenchmen being the popular selections. Of the thirteen candidates only six completed the course. Peter Maxwell was the first to fall, he failing to clear the first of the double at the kennels. This misdeed stopped Birkenella. Then at the next fence Tigerland toppled over, Landbird fell at the sod wall, and Kendal jumped on top of him and lost his rider. Landbird sustained injuries which necessitated him being destroyed. Then, when in third position, Kendal lost his rider at the brush fence. Charlatan fell at the second of the kennels double the last •time round, and Omahu, who was shaping well in third place, put himself out of court by failing to get over the second to last fence safely. Fireblight’s rider lost an iron ten furlongs from home, and also the winner. Tuki, had to bo ridden home without the assistance of ono stirrup. As the field approached the first fence Master Peter was just in front. Ho was in the picture all the wav, hilt fourth was tho best he could tlo at the end of tho journey. Fronchman gave another creditable display, lie made the running all through the last two miles and a half, and was only beaten by Tuki over tile last’hundred yards. Firoblight dropped back through making a bad jump at the sod wall. Raimi was never far away, filling third place at the finish. Tuki was purchased al auction on the previous day by tho Dunedin sports-

man, Mr J. M. Samson, whose colours he carried to victory at the first request. GOOD FINISH BY PAPER ROSE In a field of fifteen John Bradbury was entrusted with most of the monej r , and after being well placed for 6ix furlongs he got to the front quickly, and never looked 1 like getting beaten. He was ridden by F. E. Jones. During the early stages Rosenor was out making the pace, but when heads were turned for home be dropped back. Solfello then tried to show the way. but he too was soon collared. Then Tholomon put in his claim, and Paper Rose commenced her run. From the middle of the field fifty yards from home

Tholomon looked certain to get second place, but Paper Rose, finished very fas?!; and beat him by a neck. Pebo, who had always been near the leaders, occupied fourth place. Oriflamb was on the rails behind the leader for five furlongs at which stage she was beaten. FAVOURITE WELL BEATEN Centrepiece was sent out a firm favourite for the Selwyn Handicap, but after making a brave effort he could only finish fourth. Sun Up was prominent in the early stages, hut was heavily defeated in the final struggle. Master Sandstone was -well placed early, but faded in the straight. When it came to business Moorland soon settled bis opponents, and won well from Solferite, who "was also responsible for a solid performance. Of the others Royal Diadem and Bugle N6te did best. j RESULTS IN DETAIL l»e,r press. Association CHRISTCHURCH. August 15.
